“No need to mourn or weep”, wrote the 19 year old ‘Jack: (Charles John) Girling, echoing words from the New Testament. As likely as not he had heard them in Divinity classes or the Chapel of Wellington College. These schoolboy – to – man verses are symbolic of Jack’s age and generation and particularly of Wellingtonians who fought and died in the ‘Great War for Civilisation’ These verses were originally published by Jack’s father Dr C.J. Girling after Jack’s death in 1916.
